The Republic of Korea was famous for being the Land of Courtesy in the East.
Since Korean society placed so much importance on courtesy and politeness, being respectful toward one's superiors and elders was seen as non-negotiable. Even if one didn't have a speck of respect toward the older person, one still had to act respectfully as much as possible.
