I'd like to share one of my favorite Chinese expressions, 师父领进门,修行在个人. It's sort of the Chinese equivalent to "you can lead a horse to water, but can't make him drink." More accurately, it means that the teacher can teach, but progress is up to the student. The literal translation is really cool, because it contains the word that we translate as "cultivation." Here it is: The master can lead the apprentice through the gate, but it is up to the individual to practice cultivation.
