Today after work I got into the taxi and told the driver my destination. I then pulled out my phone to look over some ISSTH content. The driver glanced over and exclaimed, "English?! You're reading English!" I said. "Yes. I'm American, so..." He looked at me. "Oh, you're Chinese is so good! I didn't even notice you were a Foreigner!" Of course I felt a little pleased, but actually, this is pretty common. It was dark and he wasn't looking at me. As long as you have a good mastery of tones, many people will make this mistake. It doesn't actually mean you have incredible Mandarin. Many Chinese people in the mainland have crazy accents and dialects. After a sentence or two true dialogue, I'm pretty sure any Chinese person would realize that I'm not Chinese.
