To create something from nothing was a nearly impossible proposition, but the reverse—returning something to nothing—was a common occurrence. The two formed a repetitive cycle, with only a single point of transition between them.

At the very base of everything—absolutely everything—was the same building block. All matter was composed of countless particles, arranged in different ways to form different things. The process of these particles breaking apart or fusing together marked the appearance and disappearance of matter.
