Author's Leave Request
June 9th. Light rain.
In previous years, today would have marked the end of the gaokao.[1] Unfortunately, with the outbreak of the zombie crisis and the collapse of social order, this year is destined to have no gaokao exams.
Fifteen days have passed since my last journal entry. Hiding from zombies in this room has honestly not been pleasant.
Fortunately, there is internet here; I can still write my novel.
Food and water are dwindling. Every trip out in search of supplies is fraught with peril. To guard against zombie bites, I have to wrap my clothes and any exposed skin in tape.
I really miss those days in the hospitals. At the very least, there were other living humans like me. I’m looking out the window at the street below now. It has been a long while since I last saw anyone alive.
Come to think of it, if a zombie biting a person turns the person into a zombie, will a person biting a zombie turn the zombie back into a human?
Hmm? Why do I hear knocking? Someone is speaking at the door?!
It sounds like they’re saying they are from a rescue team and that they’ve come to save me?
Really? How could they know I’m hiding here?
Besides, I haven’t spotted any living person moving outside the window. Did I somehow miss them?
No matter what, having someone come to rescue me is a good thing. I shall go and take a look first. Let me end my diary entry here.

No, those aren’t people—they’re zombies!
(the handwriting grows uneven)
It looks like I won’t have time to write my novel tonight. I need to figure out a safe way to deal with them.
(the handwriting devolves into hurried scrawls)
1. Gaokao is China’s national college entrance exam—or to be more accurate, it’s a high school graduation exam that all students take. It is often depicted as one of the most competitive exams and is said to determine an individual’s future. ☜
