Li Yuan stood by the stream, holding a wooden basin filled with yesterday’s dirty laundry.
A little ways off, their makeshift earthen stove was burning with firewood, and the scent of simmering pork ribs wafted through the air.
He rolled up his sleeves, crouched by the water, and started scrubbing the clothes, his and Xie Yu’s.

After finishing the laundry, he casually ran a hand through his messy hair, squinted up at the sky to gauge the time, then stacked the new basin atop the old one and walked back toward their small home.
