Chapter 444: Funeral Dirge

Up above, the sky looked like it was filled with black clouds as an enormous spider leg descended upon this fifteen hundred meter area.

The ground trembled as massive pressure bore down in all directions. All life forms within the fifteen hundred meter area were completely incapable of evasion. Everything was crushed into nothing more than ash beneath the shocking power.

“He’ll die for sure!” thought Zhao Youlan. She was surrounded by the nine Nascent Soul Elders, but her face was completely white. Suddenly, she frowned.

Her frown was because of the pain of her severed arm. The pain not only caused her face to pale, but affected her mentally. It took all the effort she could muster to ignore the pain of her lost arm and focus on analyzing Meng Hao.

“That silk of his can bind up even the High Priest, which shows how powerful it is. All of his hope rests on that silk, and he probably knows exactly how powerful it is. Therefore, he’s actually most likely NOT going to die!

“His Cultivation base is profound, he’s as clever as a fox, and is extremely decisive too. He’s the type of person who is calculating and vicious. As a Grand Dragoneer, any Tribe should be wary of provoking him….” Zhao Youlan sighed lightly. Had she known that the five Tribes of the Crow Divinity had the backing of someone as powerful as Grandmaster Meng, then she would have adjusted her plans.

“Actually, it doesn’t really matter if he lives or dies. The blood I spat out just now will notify the Tribe that my trial by fire has failed. The main forces from the Tribe will be arriving soon.”

Even as she mused regarding these things, the spider leg arrived at Meng Hao, slamming into the tightly sealed silk cocoon surrounding him. From a distance, the leg looked like an enormous black sickle.

However, when it was about ten meters away from Meng Hao, it was suddenly obstructed by the Eyeless Larva silk. A massive boom echoed out, transforming into a shockwave which swept out across everything. A massive wind kicked up, battering into the surrounding Cultivators and forcing them backward.

Meng Hao’s body trembled and he coughed up blood. The black sickle pushed down from the ten meter position, slowly nearing Meng Hao. Despite its slowness, it still emanated intense, destructive pressure that pushed down onto Meng Hao.

His body trembled as the sickle reached the five meter mark.

Four meters, three meters, two meters, one meter, half a meter….

Meng Hao looked up at the sickle as it approached, his eyes radiating coldness. Although his body shook as he gazed up, when you compared this pressure with that of Heavenly Tribulation, it was simply…

“Too weak!” said Meng Hao coolly. The sickle was now only three inches away from the top of his head.

That three inch gap was like the difference between Heaven and Earth. It was an unbridgeable gap! The Eyeless Larva silk was wrapped too tightly. Nothing in Heaven or Earth could destroy it!

No matter how the sickle tried to break it, it couldn’t. Soon the sickle began to tremble. In the blink of an eye, all of its power was gone, and it transformed into ash, right there, three inches away from Meng Hao.

A howl drifted down from up above in the sky. Everything grew dim and the clouds seethed as a gigantic spider with legs like sickles magically appeared up above. It seemed to rip itself out from the void, followed by the roaring totemic Sacred Ancients of the Five Tribes, who were pestering it in a way that made it impossible for the thing to descend any further.

The instant that the black sickle disappeared, the members of the Five Tribes within the shield let out powerful roars. There were seven Nascent Soul Cultivators, as well as all the other surviving Tribe members.

The archaic Crow Soldier Tribe Greatfather, who had the combined desire for revenge of more than ten fellow Nascent Soul Tribe members imprinted on his heart lifted his head up, his eyes bloodshot, and roared:

All of the members of the Five Tribes who charged into battle screamed with rage and sadness.

Led by the Greatfather, the rest of the Tribe members charged out of from behind the shield.

Their world was now a world ruled by revenge as they charged toward the three thousand Spider Branch Cultivators. Their bodies exploded with a madness that made it clear they would bring the Spider Branch to ruin even if it meant they died in the process.

A moment later, the close-quarter fighting began. Unfortunately, the deaths of the three Dragoneers had been quite a blow to the morale of the Spider Branch.

Meng Hao’s intrepidness had also left a deep impression on their hearts. He had slaughtered his way through thousands, then soared overhead above the crowds to pursue the Holy Daughter. Nine Nascent Soul Cultivators were incapable of stopping him, and even the High Priest had been captured. People could only watch on wide-eyed, as their lofty, sacred Holy Daughter’s face filled with despair and her arm was severed, after which she fled in a panic.

All of it had been a huge blow to the Spider Branch Cultivators. Meng Hao was now not simply burned into their mind, but indelibly fused there!

If that was all there was to it, it wouldn’t be a very big deal. However, even the fearsome attack of the Holy Spider, which they assumed would surely destroy Meng Hao, did nothing. They had seen with their own eyes that the Holy Spider was incapable of exterminating him.

As of now, Meng Hao was like a nightmare to them. An unbeatable, invincible nightmare!

Now, just when their confidence and morale was lowest, the members of the Five Tribes fought back with full force. Their hatred and killing intent boiled up to the sky. Earlier, they had watched with wide eyes as their fellow Tribe members were slaughtered. The dead included children, parents, and other relatives. Right now, the eyes of the surviving Tribe members were bloodshot, and they seemed on the verge of weeping. Within the redness of their eyes, living fury could be seen. That was because… the time for revenge had arrived!

When the two sides slammed into each other, there was no leadership, nor any tricks. It was mutual slaughter.

A boom suddenly filled the air. One of the Five Tribes members slaughtered one of the enemy, but was mortally wounded in the process. Laughing madly, he chose to self-detonate. Even as his body exploded, a vicious smile twisted his face as he saw that his self-detonation would kill three of the enemy in front of him.

Booms continued to sound out in the air as one member of the Five Tribes after another, after having reached their final moment in battle, chose to use self-detonation. This was their way of sending a message to the Spider Branch: observe the staunch vengeance of the Five Tribes of the Crow Divinity!

One of the Five Tribes members lost his legs, and an arm. Even his dantian region was damaged beyond repair, making it impossible for him to self-detonate. But he still had teeth. Soon, his entire body was destroyed, and yet, his teeth were still clenched viciously into the throat of the enemy. Regardless of anything, mutual destruction would be achieved!

In a very short period of time, the Spider Branch had already lost over a hundred members. The viciousness of the scene, the explosive madness of the members of the Five Tribes to get revenge even in defiance of death, thoroughly shook the hearts of the Spider Branch Cultivators.

They were scared witless, and began panting. Facing the savagery of the Five Tribes suddenly filled them with feelings of cowardice!

They began to retreat. Off in the distance, the nine Elders watched on with wide eyes. They too were moved, but before they could even think about the situation, the seven Nascent Soul Cultivators from the Five Tribes were shooting toward them.

The High Priests, the Greatfather of the Crow Soldier Tribe, and the others, all had eyes filled with blood as they whistled through the air. This… was truly a war between two Tribes. It was different than the killing before. This… was a deadly massacre.

Meng Hao looked around at everything that was happening. He saw the Five Tribes rise up, and saw their determination to exact vengeance. It was at this time that an undulating sound could be heard. This was not the sound of war bugles, but rather, the voices of all members of the Five Tribes who had stayed behind within the protection of the shield. There were less than a thousand of them, but their voices joined together and drifted out onto the battlefield.

Most of this group of nearly a thousand people were children. The rest were the elderly. The majority of them did not have Cultivation bases; they were simple, ordinary Tribe members. However… considering all the sacrifices that had been made by the five Crow Divinity Tribes, they were hope. They were the hope of the Tribe.

Nearly a thousand people began to weep. As they wept, their feet stamped the ground and they began to sing. This song was the Tribe’s funeral dirge, the song sung to accompany the soul of any Tribe member into death.

A thousand voices joined together, filled with the sound of youth, filled with tears.

“Perhaps you are still here. Perhaps you are watching your family. Perhaps you will return….

“We hope that the Heavens will not obstruct your path. Let the land guide your way. The living, golden light of the Crow Divinity will cause your glorious bloodlines to remain in the world….

“We hope to prevent you from being buried by the sands of Time, to prevent the devils from snatching you away, to prevent the Demons from frightening you, to prevent any living thing from disturbing your rest….

“You are the warriors of the Crow Divinity! You are the pride of the Crow Divinity! You will exist forever in the lands of the Crow Divinity… we… will await your return!”

The song echoed out across the battlefield, and as it did, Meng Hao could almost make out the image of countless souls appearing. They seemed to be slowly looking back at their home, their Tribe.

As the sound of the funeral dirge rose into the air, the members of the Five Tribes who were locked in battle found that tears were flowing down their faces. They began to laugh madly and slaughter with even more savagery. Their laughter and their tears caused the faces of their enemies, the Cultivators of the Spider Branch, to fill with dread. In the past, they had slaughtered Tribes, but never before had they seen the type of explosive insanity that they were seeing now.

Now, they were scared.

    1. Why is the author making the war artificially hard? Did he screw up making Meng Hao too strong?

1 – Meng Hao has an ability that blows level 10 monsters instantly. Why the hell didnt he use it?

2 – He had more than 20 level 10 (nascent soul) spiders. Why didnt he make them fight the Nascent souls of the enemy group?

3 – His more than 20 spiders became EVEN MORE POWERFUL after the demonic Qi. Why the hell didnt he use them to fight the 9 Nascent Souls elders? WHY?

And that is considering only his 20+ spiders… Remember what the Dragoneer from who Meng took the spiders said? “None of the monsters of my tribe is at the level of his ancient monsters”.

WTF is the author doing? Is the starting to lose it?

      1. He can also use spirit severing power about thrice more, I think(I don’t think he used any of the “charges”), he never used his incantations for the blood mask, I don’t remember him using any medicinal or poison pills, why not? He also haven’t used his time sword formation that should be able to kill all of those guys. The parrot and outlander beast is mysteriously not there, why doesn’t he call for them? His beasts are weaker than they should be, why? He’s slower than he should be, he should’ve been able to move so fast over that short distance that it would seem like teleporting, why did it take such a long time for him to merely travel a few hundred meters or even kilometers? I remember that blood burst actually made you travel a few kilometers in an instant. How come he doesn’t just use his demonic QI to dominate and control all of the beasts? Where the hell are his fifteen thousand or so neo demons anyway? they all seem to have disappeared for some reason just to let the tribe get a shot at this.

He’s got so many trump cards up his sleeve, just how artificial is the author trying to make this? This shouldn’t even be difficult, he should be perfectly capable of moving instantly to that youlan girl and instant kill her, especially equipped with the green glove and blood mask. So much bullshit.

  1. Thanks for the chapter Deathblade. in fact a big thanks for translating the series, because without your efforts we wouldn’t be able to read such a great series. Er Gen is seriously good at this though. He is good enough to be on par with the big wigs of western fantasy. So my biggest thanks goes to Er Gen for his great writing.

Damn I got too emotional T.T

  2. Thanks for the chapter Deathblade! Finally! For some reason, I couldn’t comment on the other chapter this morning… Anyway, this arc has gotten interesting… and I like how chapter death death death involves a funeral dirge and massive death… lol. Well, I wonder what will happen next… will they survive when the main force comes?

    1. Fighting like this means they are breathing their last gasp, They have no chance to resist a new wave of enemies. without reinforcements all will be finished. unless MC cheats again.

  3. I don’t know if it’s just the translations or if it really says it, but it’s always so amusing when it says “If that was all there was to it, it wouldn’t be a very big deal. However…”. Even if it was in the translations, i would still want it translated this way, just for comedic reasons lol.

“Meng Hao’s intrepidness had also left a deep impression on their hearts. He had slaughtered his way through thousands, then soared overhead above the crowds to pursue the Holy Daughter. Nine Nascent Soul Cultivators were incapable of stopping him, and even the High Priest had been captured. All of it had been a huge blow to the Spider Branch Cultivators. Meng Hao was now not simply burned into their mind, but indelibly fused there!

If that was all there was to it, it wouldn’t be a very big deal. However”

lol. I mean words like “deep impression on their hearts”, “could only watch on wide-eyed”, “fled in a panic”, “huge blow”, “not only burned into their mind, but indelibly fused there”; then “it wouldn’t have been a big deal” omg…

The meanings of course (probably, in my humble opinion) is that, all of this compared to what is going to be mentioned next was not “big” (even thought it was a “big” deal in and of itself).

  4. Many Thanks for the Chapter!

Nice double release, this was a powerful one. Its always great how Er Gen makes sure to even give the known side characters a voice, rather than just a small description of what happened it gives a more realistic feeling to the world as it shows that it goes on on the individual level without the MC being the sole focus of its changes.

  5. When is Meng Hao finally going to reach Nascant Soul realm 🙁
it takes about 100 to 150 chapters for Meng Hao to reach the “next stage”
    First 100-150, “Foundation Establishment”
    250-300 “Core Formation”.
    450’s almost up… Can’t spend another 20 chapters each for the 3 other elements…

Also when he “finally” reaches Nascant Soul stage, how does he “level up”? to “mid Nascant Soul” realm, or “higher Nascant Soul” realm… I mean, maybe add more “elements” until you have 9 elements? xd

    1. Nope, the colors define the quality of the Soul, for example:

Cracked Foundation = Mixed Core = 1 or 2 colors Nascent Soul.

      Fractured Foundation = Red/Green/Orange Core = 3-colored Nascent Soul.

Flawless Foundation = Violet Core = 4-colored Nascent Soul.

And it looks like the max is 5-colored,

        1. He is Meng frikkin Hao… Without giving a real spoiler, you can guess he is probably going to surpass what one is “supposed” to have as the max by a wide margin.

  6. That was impressive. I love how even a group that is seemingly an aside from the MC is given the chance to shine even in death. The funeral song and the imagery of laughing madly with tears practically of blood falling down from their eyes had me weeping and laughing as well. The power of that scene is one I will not forget.

    Thanks for the chapter!

  7. It is kind of amazing how Er Gen was able to put the theme of death into this chapter which is also like “death death death” huh.

    P.S. Thanks for the chapter!

  8. Poor Linley always did not know “whether to laugh or cry”.
The Crow Divinity Tribe can teach him to do both at the same time.
Have faith in Deathblade, gain eternal translation. When Deathblade translates, who dares to read MTL!

  9. Love it. Revenge is the only answer for them. They killed innocent people, including women and children, just for the sake of getting a position for the other world. This is a situation where the quote “Revenge won’t make the pain go away” goes out the door. Btw, thank you for the chapter.

  10. Totally agree with Napatin’s comment. This author spends so much time masturbating over how awesome Meng Hao is, that he completely forgets all the things Meng Hao is supposed to be able to do. We hear all this bullshit about how Dragoneers are huge game changers in big battles, because they can control thousands of neo-demons and fight against an army… and yet what does Meng Hao do? He didn’t even show up until a good portion of his sides army was dead. He’s too cool to help the lowly peasants, apparently. Moreover when he did show up he still didn’t help them at all. He just killed some Dragoneers and stopped the Devil Flower (after it had killed their entire army). Which, fair enough, is important, but what the **** is his 15,000 remaining Neo-demons doing? They could easily be completely massacring the remaining 3,000 cultivators. He literally has Neo-demons that are stronger than anyone in their army.

I actually don’t understand why people rate this story so highly, like above ATG. Certain aspects of it are good, but ultimately all of the abilities Meng Hao picks up are parlor tricks which he quickly forgets the moment a convenient new ability comes along. I mean, what happened to the black net that grows in strength along with him? We haven’t seen it for at least 150 chapters. The wooden swords were also forgotten for ages until he recently started finding new ones. What about him using regular swords in massive amounts to fight? To form into the Rain-dragon thing? Oh, woops, we forgot that too. Meng Hao has so many gimmicks in his bag of tricks he can’t even keep track, let alone use all of them in one fight. If ever a strong enough opponent appears that really pushes him to the brink of death, Meng Hao will defeat them purely through bafflement as he pulls out an unceasing tide of knickknacks to fight back. He has these ‘turn into gold’ abilities now, because the author must have realised Meng Hao had gone through at least 50 chapters without picking up another completely superfluous ability, prior to mastering any of his previous ones (but that’s okay, because now he will just forget half of them anyway).

This is on top of the fact that at least 50% of this story is based around Meng Hao’s cultivating against the heavens, only, it actually doesn’t benefit him at all. Even with two divine totems, Qi condensation level 13, Perfect formation 10 pillars, Perfect gold core, in the peak of its stage, combined with the Immortal blood legacy, all his alchemy shit, the resurrection lily, heaven-defying treasures like the banner… and who knows how much crap I’m even forgetting… with all of that, he still struggles like mad against some random scrub with probably the most average of average cultivation bases, simply because they’re one step of one realm higher than he is. Literally, every single achievement he has made in this story, in 444 chapters, legacies from literal immortals that the entire world salivates over, culminates in order to barely bridge the measly gap between the ‘never seen since ancient times ultimate core/formation/condensation last demon sealer etcetera’ and …literally any average loser one step higher with no other advantages.

  11. T_____T In fact, many real historic battles are even more brutal & cold blooded than this man-made story. In this story, the attackers just used some successful strategies, they had done every army that should. they killed only fighters and didn’t have broken any bottom line of war. In real world when Mongols attacked, they drove all the bare-handed common people they can find to attack the cities, block arrows for mongol soldiers, they slaughter commoners and used the bodies to fill the river up so that their horses can run on the bodies and across the river.

  12. This…. woah….

This novel is awesome! From laugh to anxiety, from anxiety to euphoria, and from euphoria to sadness….

And to answer some of the complaining guys above, why Meng hao should have heavily injured imself in using life consuming skills and items, considering that he did not have a truly great enmity with the spider tribe. I mean, he is not a member of the crow tribes, only a helper..
