Mask of the Dreamless

“A.I. Chip, conduct scan!” Leylin ordered, and the A.I. Chip quickly sent a passage of information to him.

[Alabaster Devilsnake: Rumoured to be a descendant of the Snake Dowager that inherited dreamforce. Likes to torture its prey in their dreams before digesting them. Matures at rank 5.]

It gave him a thought. ‘Even the Snake Dowager needs to use a large amount of energy in order to send dreamforce to a faraway world. That’s probably why she just activated the Allsnake Curse and then left the rest to her children…’

*Hss—* At this moment, the Alabaster Devilsnake was flicking its scarlet tongue as its blood red eyes were fixed on Leylin. Its body rumbled as it moved abruptly, turning into a streak of white lightning.

‘There’s no choice but to act!’ Leylin laughed wryly, the energy in his body beginning to boil, “Dream spell…”

White lightning seemed to flicker through the void, and when things returned to normal Leylin was back in the real world.

At this moment, his face looked wretched. The Allsnake Curse on his forehead spread a lot of black veins, greedily absorbing his own bloodline force and turning the strength from his own body into a curse. It was a continuous cycle with no cure.

[Warning! Warning! Host’s bloodline force has reached the threshold and is about to drop from Radiant Moon.]

The red warning prompt the A.I. Chip sent out caused Leylin’s heart to sink. While he’d done his best to hold back his strength, in order to escape from Dreamscape he had no choice but to use dream spells and his bloodline force. It had provided the Allsnake Curse wtih an opportunity to act up.

‘No, this can’t go on! A.I. Chip, set up a maze in Dreamscape,’ Leylin quickly commanded. The possibility of being dragged into a dream and assaulted from all sides caused his face to turn dark.

[Beep! Mission established, beginning projection of guiding coordinates. Setting up Dreamscape firewall] the A.I. Chip immediately intoned. That was the result of Leylin’s studies on Dreamscape. He could try to prevent others from pulling him into a dream, and while he did not know how well it would go, it was still better than nothing.

Making use of this borrowed time that would be hard to come by, Leylin immediately started on other plans, ‘A.I. Chip, begin procedure D-23, let’s forge the Mask of the Dreamless!’

This command was to make the necessary preparations for the Snake Dowager attacking through Dreamscape.

[Mission established! Beginning simulation. Materials required: 300g of Luk Alloy, tooth of single-eyed snake…] These were all materials Leylin had found could isolate dreamforce in his previous experiments. A black gas appeared on his body with the A.I. Chip’s report, and the materials it had mentioned floated out from a flickering light in his waist pouch.

A bundle of demonic black light was formed, devouring the materials. Leylin looked calm as he watched the materials dissolve in the flames, occasionally making some seals and transferring some refining runes into the flames.

Just these few casual movements were extremely fluid, exhibiting the terrifying abilities of a Grandmaster alchemist.

With Leylin’s powerful control, it wasn’t long before a mask with only one half hovered above the flames. This mask was completely black, its fluid lines and decorative designs giving it a unique aesthetic. A strange aura was emitted from it.

The mask flew out and covered Leylin’s face, blocking the Allsnake Curse on his forehead.

Leylin seemed to change after wearing the mask, and now seemed to have some mysterious charm.

The A.I. Chip soon listed the ingredients and all sorts of information about the mask. [Unique Magic Item— Mask of the Dreamless. Weight: 200g. Material: Luk Alloy, tooth of single-eyed snake. Effect: Prevents being spied on with dreamforce. Protects truesoul from invasions from Dreamscape…]

The icy cold mask covered part of Leylin’s skin, making him feel at ease, “Thankfully, I’d already been focusing on dealing with dream invasions, and had invented the Mask of the Dreamless.”

His fingers stroked the mask, feeling the complicated and intricate patterns. This mask was formed from simulations based on the A.I. Chip’s database. On top of that, with Leylin’s eye as a Grandmaster alchemist and his creativity allowed him to create this item.

It only had a singular function in blocking dream invasions, which meant it couldn’t be classified as a magic artifact or equipment. However, it’s ability did not lose out in value to some magical equipment either.

To Leylin, who’d altered himself for Dreamscape and was sensitive to dreamforce, the Mask of the Dreamless was something that finally allowed him to relax. ‘Unless the mask is destroyed, my opponent’s can’t just drag me into a dream and use up my strength…’

Leylin now fully comprehended the terror that was the Snake Dowager. Even while they were in different worlds, he could do nothing against her. Thankfully, with this as a buffer, he could now calm down and think through this matter.

“A.I. Chip, check the database of all the simulations I authorised and find a method to solve the Allsnake Curse.”

Leylin’s voice was low, and the A.I. Chip quickly began to operate as large amounts of information appeared in front of him. Countless formulae were used, and a faint image of the Snake Dowager even appeared in the virtual space.

With the countless calculations, the A.I Chip came up with a conclusion. [Host has 3 options:
The Snake Dowager removes the mark of her own accord.
Host gets the blessing of a rank 9 existence, using their origin force to purge the Host’s bloodline.
Host completely breaks through bloodline shackles, severing all ties with the Snake Dowager.]

‘Plans 1 and 2 are impossible, there are too many uncertain variables. I can’t do anything for a high-ranked existence, so I’d have to rely on luck,’ Leylin touched his chin, light glinting in his pupils, ‘The only choice is to break through the restriction on the bloodline and break away from these shackles completely!’

The control and curse of the Snake Dowager came from the Giant Kemoyin Serpent’s bloodline force. If Leylin could completely shatter the bloodline shackles and become an independent being, he would no longer be affected by her.

As he was now, this was the most feasible plan.

“But I didn’t expect to meet her so quickly. I’ll have to find a way to break the bloodline shackles. I can’t skip this, and I’ll have to go to Purgatory World…”

Leylin looked grim, ‘With my current state, I need to keep a low profile for a period of time…’ With this thought, he transformed into a bundle of black flames and disappeared.

……

In the Morning Star Area. Jeffrey wore a black swallow-tailed coat with not even a hair out of place, seeming like the most upright gentleman.

“Lady Freya is about to give birth. This is something worthy of celebration for our Warlock Union!”

“Yes! The rank 5 bloodline in our union now has been passed on! With the talent His Highness Leylin has shown, the future of his bloodline descendants is going to be bright…”

Offa laughed as he spoke. He was now waiting with Jeffrey above the castle for Leylin.

Flustered maids and servants ran everywhere in the castle. A layer of crimson energy spread through the area, gradually enveloping a room and still travelling outwards. The low voice of a woman sounded within.

“This is a rank 5 bloodline! Is it the Giant Kemoyin Serpent? What’s going on? Does the Kemoyin Serpent have an ancestor or something like that?” Jeffrey was rather curious about this.

“No. His Highness’ bloodline is the purest Kemoyin bloodline, there’s no doubt about it. Based on my observations, the bloodline he’s inherited might very well be that of the ancient Kemoyin Emperor, the ruler of the Giant Kemoyin Serpents!” Offa’s voice was soft, as if he was revealing some huge secret.

“Hss… In other words…” Jeffrey sucked in a breath of cold air.

“Yes! The royal family of the Ouroboros Clan has appeared. There is no leader more proper than the Kemoyin Emperor!” Ruling bloodlines held immense control over bloodline clans. This was the same case with the Snake Dowager over Leylin, and based on his Kemoyin Emperor bloodline Leylin had authority over the lives and deaths of the Kemoyin Warlocks under him.

His bloodline definitely ruled the Ouroboros Clan!

“The Ouroboros Clan will forever be subservient to the ruling bloodline to the day that the bloodline dies off. Unless that happens, betrayal will not occur for eternity!” Offa’s voice was still as low as before, “We have to be even more prudent when dealing with His Highness.”

“That I know, but… Bevis…” Jeffrey could only laugh wryly.

No matter what organisation it was, the appearance of talents like Bevis and Leylin were worthy of celebration. However, the two geniuses did not see eye to eye, which resulted in a great catastrophe.

To be honest, the reason they were here was to serve as protection and as a warning.

If not, Leylin would definitely not let Bevis go. If he were to do anything drastic the consequences were not anything they wanted to see.

Otherwise, even for the birth of a child with a rank 5 bloodline, there wouldn’t be two Radiant Moon Warlocks on guard duty.

At the mention of this, Jeffrey seemed to think of something and suddenly asked. “Lord Offa, did you see the news regarding the Blazing Flame Monarch?”

    1. Well there are the the people he passed on the training technique to and then there is his little sister from the other time he was pulled into the Dreamscape. He gave her something.

  1. Leylin is about to get a level 5 bloodline with dreamforce gift wrapped to him…..Which will allow him to alter his bloodline further and probably better understand/control dreamforce. If he could not use it to easily enter ‘dream world’ or whatever it is called I will be surprised.

      1. He won’t sever the bloodline or he won’t be a warlock anymore. I think he’s gonna mutate the bloodline cause he can’t evolve it further

    1. ooooh that’s one card he didn’t use yet. It has a high possibility that it will be used. I thought split soul technique is only a support power up and not as a fighting tool.

  2. I just want to ask, do you think that the soul splitting technique can be used to split the bloodline that is bound with his true soul into a clone (Just like Melinda did, split the negative emotions and left the most beneficial ones for herself) and then, in some magical way, finds a way on how to advance to Breaking Dawn?

  3. Ohhh man don’t wanna see him losing his bloodline i like so much how badass a warlock is…why could’nt the Shake Dowager be like a mom and help hers descendants to evolve, leylin just want to be immortal and seek the truth…well its very likely that he would backstab her if it was this way though…

    1. Not likely. The whole reason Leylin had children in the first place was because he knew they would aid him in the future. He definitely wouldn’t stunt their growth by experimenting on them. They are his direct blood and Leylin respects family (so long as they aren’t extremely detrimental to him of course).

Plus he’s already studied (and modified) his own blood to the limits so he wouldn’t gain any new knowledge from his children which share his blood. Of course, if there’s some rare mutation…

  4. Thanks for the chapter!
I really don’t feel much pity for Leylin right now. I just feel a strong sense of apathy. Neither Leylin nor the Snake Dowager are good people, so it’s hard for me to feel sorry for either of them when setbacks occur. You know, in some ways the Snake Dowager is Leylin’s benefactor. Her existence created the source of Leylin’s bloodline, and therefore without her Leylin would not have any of the glory and power he managed to earn so far. Rebelling is almost like backstabbing his benefactor. I’m not saying Leylin should be her slave, but he is a huge hypocrite for hating her control ability when he himself takes such pleasure in controlling the rest of the Ouroborous clan the same way she does with her descendants. Reading about their conflict is like reading about the fight between one dictator and another dictator. It’s all the same for the little people, no matter who wins.
And just as a side note, Leylin rebelling against the Snake Dowager is like someone rebelling or disgracing their ancestor. In China, where ancestor worship is still an element of their culture, what Leylin is doing is just terrible. It does make a good story though. *pulls out a bag of popcorn*

    1. Lol idk why you’re trying to say he’s doing the wrong thing by rebelling. She wants to kill him and would have succeeded already, if Leylin wasn’t such a badass, in killing him. As for saying Leylin is going to suppress his own kind if they ever get close to surpassing himself…. Yeah, he totally would. But at the same time Leylin is going to actually progress and not stagnate for hundreds of thousands of years or more like the Snake Dowager. So I think he’d eventually let them get to rank 7 and above. And as for leylin being a bad person… Lol yeah. Obviously. It surprises me that you’ve managed to read all the way up to here when you’re still not cheering for the badass Leylin at this point. To say that all of Leylin’s accomplishments are solely because of the bloodline is folly. Leylin would have found a way without the bloodline (As long as he realized taking the grime water would cripple him so he would avoid that) with his A.I. Chip and his wits. It just would have taken a lot longer, and he’d have a lot less talent without the bloodline.

      1. Actually! Err. Sorry. Leylin is a bad person so it’s fine if you don’t like him and whether or not Leylin owes everything or just quite a lot to the Snake Dowager is a matter of opinion. I just get really excited over these things.

        1. Oh no, you’re totally free to your own opinion. Sorry, I wasn’t trying to impose my view anyone, just trying to put my feeling of apathy into words. I wasn’t saying rebelling is a bad thing, per se – after all, not rebelling would leave him dead, or a slave. Just that it would be a social faux pas if you think about it from a culture like China which glorifies it’s ancestors.
You make a good point, in that yes Leylin’s successes aren’t totally dependent on his bloodline; rather, it is more dependent on the AI chip. But you do have to admit that without the Snake Dowager, it would be a lot harder for Leylin to have achieved his current strength. His bloodline certainly gave him many benefits. It’s simply a matter of opinion on how much Leylin owes to the source of his bloodline.
I will admit that at time this story has been quite entertaining (and quite real, no fake heroism here) but it’s hard for me to cheer him on when I read about him doing creepy/psychopathic acts like mind controlling (is bloodline control mind control?) people like his own wife and getting immense satisfaction from controlling every part of them. It just gives me chills (the bad kind).

          1. Yes you’re right. I can see how Leylin could be seen as sacreligious. And Leylin has relied on the superiority of his Warlock strength to overcome his opponents of the same rank the whole novel just about. Leylin reminds me of Dexter from the show Dexter. He’s a cold sociopath just pretending to be human. Which to me is interesting, but I’m still not too far gone to know that the show is quite disturbing. Thanks for your viewpoints and discussion, they were quite good and I pretty much agree, I’ve already assimilated it into my A.I. chip’s database 😀

          2. I do need to apologize though because I was acting in a superior, snotty, derogatory tone to you in the above comment. Saying stupid stuff like “obviously” and “idk why you’re trying to say”. Bleh I can just hear my arrogant and antagonistic manner. Please accept my formal apology so I know you’lll continue to share your viewpoints in the future. They’re good! *sigh* I still have much to learn. I hope you see this haha, I’m not sure if you will though. Just in case, I’ll be checking in for the next few days.

          3. Weird, I can’t reply to your comment. I guess it’s too far down the reply chain lol. But don’t apologize, you were simply defending this novel from what you perceived as an attack. It is because of people like you – the fans, that a story like this can keep going. I hope you continue to comment as well, and share your thoughts with us all! It’s that difference in opinion that helps to drive a good discussion. 😀 Honestly, I could have phrased my comment better. Rereading it now, it does sound like I’m scolding Leylin for not siding with the Snake Dowager, when all I wanted was to do some speculation and discussion. I have much to learn myself as well! Let us both enjoy this roller coaster of a novel together, through the good and the bad!

At the very least, I like Leylin a lot better over the ATG MC. I had to eventually drop that series over how gross he was acting. Also the lack of challenges, and the general OP plot armor. It was such a pity. He started out so Leylin-like, with his schemes and plans but eventually degenerated into a brainless muscle brute who got everything he wanted. But that is a discussion (rant?) for another novel, and another thread.

    2. I haven’t really noticed any hate of the snake dowager from Leylin, more like he simply feels threatened by her, thus why they are having a conflict, two dictators being threatened by the other’s power.
Slightly surprised you are, at all, complaining about morals this far into the novel.

      1. Oh no, did it come sounding as a complaint? I suppose it could be interpreted that way, but I was mainly just trying to explain my lack of pity for Leylin’s troubles right now, with some lore speculation. I totally understand what kind of world this is set in, and to expect the MC to be a good person is just naive. And to expect the MC not to fight back is just idiotic. Also, it makes for a boring novel. Still, when I see the two rulers fighting it out for supremacy and one of them gets disadvantaged; all I can feel is a slight sense of apathy. It’s not a hero vs. villain situation, but a ruler vs. ruler situation, and if we’re being quite honest both of them share very many similarities. In the end, who wins and who loses – does it really matter? Their very conflict brings us entertainment, so I guess the longer they fight the better it will be for us readers.
Sorry, one of my hobbies is role play/role immersion, so I tend to take things more seriously than they really are. xD

        1. No, no. You said your point very well and was quite courteous too. That is very rare on the internet. Not even sure if I could fit the profile.

        2. Ah. I apologise for assuming you were complaining, I guess I jumped to that conclusion because of others saying that they are dropping this and that for stuff that was basically established in the synopsys.
Also after reading your response higher up, I get your point.
I hope you have a good day.

  6. I wonder if Leylin will be a good father… He could send his child in the twilight zone a projection of him, just as he did with the magi that trained on the sacred flame (the prophecy thing) to guide it and make him used to it as a father/mentor figure until he meets the real Leylin.

    Thanks for the chapter!
