Slight Slowdown in New CD Chapters

Hey guys, I just wanted to get this on the record.  Going forward, I’m going to have to slightly slow down the number of sponsored chapters I am doing on the weekdays from 3/day to 2-3/day.  Before I say anything else, yes, the weekends will remain at 3 chapters/day, and I will still be doing my 1-2 regular chapters each week.  More info beneath the jump.

So before I begin, let me explain what my daily Monday to Friday schedule has been like for about…three and half months now.

In the mornings, I usually start translating the first chapter (which I’ve usually gotten a head start on the previous night) from 6:30 AM – 8: 30 AM, then run over to my bus to work.   I spend the next 30 minutes on the bus translating, and some of the time, I’m mostly finished by the time I get to work.  At work, I work from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, which is when my lunch break starts.  If the chapter is already done, I upload it then, then spend around 45 minutes of my 60 minute lunch (15 minutes for food) starting on the second chapter, then get back to my regular work from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.  From 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM on the bus ride back home, I do some translating, and then another ~2 hours from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at home.  I usually grab some food around 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM, then finish off the third chapter and start on the ‘first chapter’ for the next day from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM, after which I get to sleep.

So as you can see, my schedule has been utterly packed silly, and I’ve been going 100% for months now.  I knew from the beginning that it wouldn’t be able to go on forever, but I wanted to go as long as I could.  Resting on the weekends helped, as does the once a month ‘off day’, but unfortunately, I’m at the point right now where I am no longer capable of maintain that output every day.

Basically, at this point in time, I find I’m just really tired most days, and it’s impacting my ability to carry out my regular job, which is my red line.  My right hand is still cramping from all the typing, and honestly, I’ve been running on fumes for a while now.  You can only last on 5-6 hours of sleep a day for so long, unfortunately.

Starting Monday, during weekdays, I’m going to have to go back to what the original plan was when I first started accepting donations in early December (before even started); two chapters during most weekdays, and three chapters on weekends.  If on a particular weekday, I feel up to it, I’ll still try to do three chapters, and it’ll probably happen quite often….but I just wanted to let you guys know that ‘three a day’ is no longer ironclad, unfortunately.

To any that I might have disappointed; sorry gang, but I have to take a bit better care of myself.  I held out as long as I could!  One of the reasons I held out for as long as I did was that I will have a new job/be moving in July/August, so I wanted to get the translation done before then, but alas, it seems we’ll have to slow down the pace just a little bit.

Thanks for reading!  I’ll leave this post stickied for a while so people know what’s up when they start seeing two chapter days more frequently 🙂

  1. Uh this hellish schedule would have killed a lesser man in a month.

I understand that you enjoy translating, but this is dangerous..

As said Yoshimizu Akira, “It’s not good to be reckless after all. Going steady is the best〜”

  2. DooD just stick with 1-2 chaps a day.
Get moar rest! or time to read other Novels for your own Enjoyment.
Well.. that is unless your enjoyment is earning money through Bribes :3

  3. Seriously doubt anyone will actually complain about you doing only two a day Ren. You are still spoiling everyone with that. Most translation sites don’t even put out one a day. It’s mostly one every couple days to one a week.

Don’t over do it with work and translating. You have to take care of yourself. You should definitely give yourself another day off a month or even make it one day off a week. Every single one of us will understand that and patiently wait on your translations. So do what you need to do to get more rest and get better.

  4. dude, you go out with your girlfriends and friends sometimes, go to a bar, party with your workmates, sing with your boss, compliment him/her sometimes even though he/she is bad at it, but don’t make it obvious, it’s okay to have a day off every week… no one will complain of it, you got a life, don’t make it hard, or you’re going to have a burnout, develop stress… ya know stress is the root of all sickness.

      1. But in all seriousness ren we know how much you work, the community won’t mind a decrease, some addicts will but ill try to help them along with maybe create a Panlong anonymous for addicts xD we appreciate you, and don’t want you wearing yourself out.

  5. I think many of us here already say this coming. I believe u should have a week offto heal up and then go 1 chapter a day. Iread so many other novels but i dont get this wonderful treatment. Take care of ur self Ren.

  6. I would say that rather than posting a third on a weekday (if you find yourself the time), it might be better to just let yourself work “ahead” a little. I.e. , build yourself some breathing room. That way if you feel like taking the day off, but you’re a couple chapters ahead, everybody wins 🙂

  7. No problem Ren. I think it was about time you slowed the pace down a bit since your hand has been cramping up. I would never be able to do the same output as that for so long. I would have lasted half a week. XD

By the way, what is your job/job title?

  8. Wow. What a busy schedule and you’ve held out long enough. It just shows how dedicated and willing you are to translate Coiling Dragon. For that we are grateful and glad for your accomplishments. Thank you so much
But ofcourse health is the first priority. You’ve got to take care of yourself since you’ve got work and a lifestyle.
    Heal up bro!

  9. Your health is the most important, but can I advise to give people incentive to donate if donation reach a certain amount you go back to 3 a day. I know it sound like I am being rude, but it will get people to donate and help you out on your move amount like 3000 on donation should be a good amount.

    1. Hi sm0g, welcome to the community! It really isn’t a matter of money; I’m just too tired to sustain it right now, and it’s impacting my ability to do my primary job, which to be frank, on a per hour basis pays me way better, AND is a long term career, so I cannot let that be impacted. Anyhow, thanks for being here!

      1. you sleep too much already!! I only sleep 3-4 hrs a day (1am to 4am) 😛 but then again im used to it.
Do get some rest, it wouldnt be fun if you arent around. take care of yourself.

  10. In his free schedule a machine translator can put out 1 chapter a day and still have some 5 mistakes(talking about Ark here),it takes him about 4 hours per chapter(pretty sure editing was included). You are fast like a machine translator, have less mistakes and have actual knowledge of the language(don`t know turtle`s proficiency with Korean but it sure as hell doesn`t match up to yours in regards to Chinese).I was here when you were putting out 1-2 chapters a week(pretty sure you sometimes did 3,but that was rare-ish),I think I`ll be fine if you put out “only” 2 a day xD
Best of luck with recuperating, and thanks for the translations!

  11. I’m totally addicted …even thinking about teaching myself how to read chinese characters now.
You’ve bin good to us man, and at 2 a day u will still be spoiling us.
Thank u for everything …u deserve some happiness too considering how much joy u bring to others.

  12. it’s about time you started to slow down your pace was ungodly.
I think you will be surprised at how may of your readers are truly happy at this news. You should probably just do one a day for a month give your body enough time to recuperate.
Don’t forget we your readers love you Ren. So no killing yourself off

  13. I’ve been reading CD since the beginning of January and all I can say is bravo for keeping up that kind of speed for so long. Well done now get some rest you deserve it.

  14. well, most people have already said it, its been long overdue, so thank u for enduring that hellish pace for so long 😉 also in regards to ur hand, it kills me to say this but i would even suggest to not translate at all for a week, or even(im dying) a month, bc from personal experience, a tendon inflamation is no fun:( also, regardless of whether u do so or not, i suggest, instead of a day off a month, a day off a week.

tldr: dw about it, 2 chaps a day is still spoiling us, dont over do it with ur hand and maybe have a free day a week not a month 😉

  15. Thanks for the awesome translations bro and please take care of yourself, I hope you can continue translating wonderful Chinese novels for a long long time, not just cd, hopefully xd pacing yourself is best I guess.

  16. I going to be brutally honest and Admit I loved the three chapters a day, but that hardly means you should comply with that, even two chapters a day is waaay above the norm, heck one chapter a day would still be above average. I like the novel and I love to see it updated as often as it is, but who cares? I won’t die over having “only” two chapters. You have no real obligation to kill yourself over this, and people are thankful for all the handwork you had placed and keep on placing on this.
    Be well, and thank you.

  17. Ren how did you even sustain that for so long?

Are you supposed to be a cyborg? Your translation pace has been obscenely fast for so long even with work. “Only” 2 chapters a day is far above the pace that the vast majority of translators can even hope to reach even with multiple people working. The vast majority of us(including me) are just leechers anyways, so most of us wouldn’t have any right to complain anyways when you give us far more than we deserve far too quickly.

Don’t run yourself into the ground. Burning out is not to be taken lightly.

  18. If you kept this up any longer I would not have believed you’d be human. lol
Anyway thanks Ren for all the hard work, and stop overworking yourself, especially your hand needs proper care, because something like that can turn out to be serious, as the years of strain pile up.

  19. the only thing i was confused about is why you still need a normal job aside from the fact that coiling dragon is limited and eventually will end

and no im not complaining at all im glad your taking care of yourself XD

its just you made 240 usd a day, 1,680 usd a week and if kept at same pace 613,200 usd a year [didnt factor in breaks or free chapters sorry too lazy] just from translations granted DDOS protection costs and so does hosting the domain ect but eh i digress lol

    1. Hi Yeavon, I would be incredibly stupid to give up a very well paying (way better than CD on both a per hour basis AND on a net basis) and stable career that has very high upward mobility for the sake of a translation hobby that people may or may not lose interest in, and which, as you put it, will eventually run out anyhow. There’s not even the slightest question in my mind about which is more important. 🙂

PS: Check your math. You added an extra zero to the yearly amount 😉

      1. wasn’t attempting for that to come off as it did, my bad and yeah i understand as you said it wouldn’t be wise edit: its late here so yeah math+tired = bad combo

        1. should of been 86,000 if my math is correct this time i wouldn’t put too much faith in it like i said im practically a zombie atm, totally ignore my first comment tho as i feel like i put a foot or two in my mouth XD
