I can't stress enough how much this novel surprised me, is this really a Chinese author? It surpassed my wildest expectations and established a new standard for good characterization, there are a few plot devices here and there that for a moment seem to force the story to go in one direction BUT considering the length the numbers are negligible. I also feel the need to "warn" you that the start is really underwhelming and seems like the plot is not going anywhere but endure it for about half of book 1 and then you get to the really good stuff.
Then last but not least I find the MC to be enjoyable in the sense that you can empathize with and understand the choices he makes. His progression and development, considering the situations he finds himself in, is well thought.
My last advice is to absolutely and immediately start reading this but beware of judging too soon anything in this novel, some things may seem called for but for the rest you might get really surprised.
