Happy New Year! Final Announcement

Happy New Years, guys!  This is my fourth and final announcement, and it’s slightly belated one, for good reasons.  However, now is the time to announce it.  This won’t mean too much to a lot of you, but it means a lot to me, and I thought I’d share, since y’all have been along for it.  As of December 21, 2015, literally one year to the day after I started Wuxiaworld…I have resigned from my previous career.  I will now be focusing on Wuxiaworld full-time.

Quite a few of you have been curious as to what I did, and I never wanted to discuss it, for a simple reason; as many of my old friends at SPCNET know, I (was) a professional American diplomat who worked in our Embassies around the world (hence my recent move to Hanoi).  I didn’t want to bring politics and all that heavy stuff into WW, so I’ve never discussed it here, and I’ve done my best to keep those two lives separate.  Increasingly, however, Wuxiaworld has taken up more and more of my time, even aside from translating; negotiating over copyrights, working with editors on publishing books, website maintenance, ad management and network testing, server maintenance, recruiting…all these things take a tremendous amount of time, and of course, I’m translating as well.

Being a diplomat, in turn, is not a 9-5 job; for months, even after the slowdown, I’ve been working my ‘regular’ job from 8 AM to 6 or 7 PM, then doing WW from 8 PM to 1 AM.  Something had to give; I wasn’t doing as good of a job on either front as I felt I should be.  It was one or the other.  So, after lots of debate and soul-seeking…I decided that I would go with the ‘other’.  Wuxiaworld was (is) my baby; I wasn’t going to give that up.  And so, my career as a diplomat was what had to go.

Needless to say, mommy and daddy are MOST displeased about this (sorry, pops!).  It was an extremely stable, respectable, and well-paying career that let me see the world and meet with people and do things that I’ll probably never have the chance to do again.  Even now, I feel a tinge of regret for having given it up.  But…sometimes, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.  Sometimes, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.  I might regret this in a few years from now, but the safe road is not always the right one; sometimes, it’s the less-trodden path.  Right?

What does it mean for you all?  Well, first of all, let me make one thing clear; it doesn’t suddenly mean that I’ll be doing like ten chapters a day now.  There’s a huge amount of unseen back-end work that needs to be done, and even 3 CD/DE length chapters every day (which I plan on for January), when done too long, will result in serious hand cramps.  What this really means is that I’ll be able to not kill myself, while still providing the highest quality translations at a fast pace, and taking care of everything else that I need to care of, such as copyright negotiations (the recent stuff that’s been happening in the Japanese world is a good example of why this part of it is so important, if underappreciated).  This will increase my longevity as a translator, and hopefully help make Wuxiaworld not only a long-lasting fixture, but a better one.

You’ve all been with me and the other translators here for a year now, and from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all for your past, current, and (hopefully) future support.  2016 will be a phenomenal year for all of us, I hope!  To reword Grandmaster Pill Demon from ISSTH, when you joined us at Wuxiaworld as readers, the seeds of karma were sown between us.  So long as you do not break those karmic ties, neither shall I!

Humbly yours,

PS: Let me close out with a final picture of myself; one final look back, before we look forward.  Quite a few of y’all asked for pictures in the past; here is one of my proudest pictures from a few years ago, with a certain special lady (she’s not popular with everyone, I know, but…whatever xD).

  1. Wow, Ren. I can’t believe how much commitment you have put into satisfying us readers. I know for sure I will continue to support WW and I think it should be fine for you as there are tons of novels out there to translate. Your translations are (probably) of the highest quality in the translating community so no matter what you translate, many will be there to read it. What you have built here can definitely remain stable if things go well, and I certainly expect it to.

  2. Thank you for the dedication Ren, it must have been an incredibly hard decision! On a side note, I am an economics major in my senior year of college and would very much like to discuss some of the online copyright issues you face, although I doubt I could give any help to a former diplomat. I would just like the opportunity to learn a bit more about the intricacies of online copyright publications, since I mostly focus on microeconomics of operations it is something I am not as knowledgeable about as I would like to be.

    1. Take some notes and create a post for this Zeek. I am curious as to how this works as well. I really like the idea of buying the books off Amazon but I don’t know if it is feasible for most authors. I guess a lot of trial and error is going into this project.

    2. You can drop me an email at rwxwuxiaworld(a) gmail.com, although to be honest, I’m busy as all balls so I might not be able to respond promptly at all, esp. since it’s New Years!

  3. WOOOWWW What a hard decision REN!
Now thats what i call commitement to follow your ideal pleasure
In any case i have been following WW everyday since juin here in France, and although i haven’t made any donations because of my lack of $ but i do leave the adds !
In any case i do thank you and all the other Translators for your hard work, and i’ll keep supporting you
    Read on!

p.s nice to see a face of the famous REN 🙂

  4. Looks like it’s time to reread Desolate Era! I stopped reading right before the whole fight for the mine. Thanks again for your dedication and I can’t wait for the new chapters 🙂

  5. Wow! Ren that’s a big decision you have made, but I also think that you have to love the work you do, money and status are secondary things, so I wish you all the best, that’s all I do to support you. And thank you for your work.

  6. Well, Ren, I thank you for your commitement and the sacrifice you made to carry on with your passion for wuxia novels. I hope for the best for you, and I give you my admiration for going toward your dreams even against your family’s wishes.

  7. Wow, I’m actually amazed you managed to go through with that. I don’t know if I would have the courage to do it! I admire your decision to follow the path you want in life, and not the one that was expected of you. I hope WW becomes everything you ever wanted and more!

  8. Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to follow so many adventures. I really wish you the best for yours. Congrats for the bravery you had in choosing these path.

Bonne année et Meilleurs voeux pour 2016!

  9. You’ve made a decision that I would never be brave enough to make. To show my support, I’ve turned off all ad blocking for your domain and will be occasionally clicking on ads that are remotely interesting to me.

I’ve been telling myself that I would turn off ad blocking for some time now but have just been too lazy (yeah, I didn’t want to be bothered to spend 2 seconds doing that…). I figure if you can lunge head first into uncharted territory, the least I can do is turn off ad blocking… Best of luck to you!

  10. I have made an account just to thank you for creating Wuxiaworld.

However, seeing that you value Wuxia more than your function as a diplomat (which is great for us). Have you considered the long term perspective in this trade off? As I am new to these novels I can’t help but wonder what you will be translating in the future. Is there sufficient fuel in the market of novels? Because at the moment your website is translating all the great novels, but the translating speed is faster than the raws being produced. At some point you will catch up, will you then switch over to translate works in another language i.e. Japanese novels? Or are there still a lot of other great Chinese novels yet to be translated? And how vast is this resource to continue to translate for x years into the future?

I hope that you have thought about this, if not then maybe it’s still not to late to reconsider or find a solution if needed.

  11. RWX, I salute you for taking this step!!! It takes courage and guts (and some money) to do this – Follow your dreams and interests, while you are still able to. This is usually known as “The path not taken”.

    Thank you very much!

Words cannot express the feelings, and all we can do is – TRY.

  12. Greetings from Denmark

Respect to you that you took this choice. I’ve had so many mixed emotions when reading my favourite novels on this site. I also might start to donate like 5$ a month, like some kind of subscription, because I gain so much entertainment when reading. Good luck to WX and may you be successful in 2016 as well.

    Mr. Jama
