GOR Chapter 182: Encroaching Upon The Forbidden Zone

The chauffeur lightly patted the wrinkled area of his collar before looking eye to eye with Chen Xiaolian. “I can give you the specific whereabouts of Qiao Qiao and Soo Soo. But, not now… at present, you need to put all your focus into surviving this instance dungeon. If possible, I would rather not have such a rare Irregularity die on me.”

“Irregularity? Don’t you mean virus?”

“Even if you are a virus, you are still the prime virus! As for your other guild members, Qiao Qiao, Roddy… they are all second-generation viruses who were infected by you… do you understand?”

“Wait a minute, I don’t get it… what do you mean prime, and why second-generation…”

“The metallic sphere that represents the account,” The chauffeur stared intently at Chen Xiaolian. “Only when a Player or an Awakened is killed by you, will the metallic sphere drop out. You should already have known about this.”

Indeed, Chen Xiaolian knew about this.

That was how Roddy and Qiao Qiao was able to get their hands on the metallic spheres and become Irregularities.

“You probably haven’t figured out this one other thing. Only when… the prime viruses kill an Awakened will the metallic sphere come out. The prime viruses that I am talking about are none other than… you and Soo Soo. Only the two of you.

“As for Qiao Qiao and Roddy, they are the equivalent of second-generation viruses that were infected by you… when they kill an Awakened or a Player, the metallic sphere will not drop out, understand?

“Thus… the existence of prime viruses is a valuable thing! You people are the source, the only ones who can continue to create Irregularities! If both you and Soo Soo were to die… then that would be the end. It doesn’t matter if it is Qiao Qiao or Roddy, neither of them could get the metallic spheres to drop out when killing Awakened ones and Players. [1]

Chen Xiaolian was shocked.

“Between you and a little girl, it is only natural that I have more expectations toward you.”

Virus… source?

Only he and Soo Soo could create more viruses…

Chen Xiaolian abruptly raised his head and directed his gaze into the chauffeur’s eyes!

He kept his eyes staring forward for a full 10 seconds.

Then, he asked something peculiar.

“The upper plane… how does it look like?”

The chauffeur’s face turned slightly odd. Then, he slowly shook his head. “You already know that I cannot tell you. This is the rules of the system. Not to mention, those rules are the fundamental directive! As for me, it would not be wrong to say that I am part of the system. I cannot violate the fundamental directive of the system.”

Chen Xiaolian snorted and continued in a frosty tone. “Very well, you do not need to say anything. I’ll guess!”

He pointed toward the chauffeur. Then, he retracted his finger and pointed toward his nose. “First, the ‘life form’ in the upper plane must be humans! Humans that are similar to us!”

“Oh? How can you be so certain?”

“Very simple!” Chen Xiaolian was quick to come up with an answer and he continued immediately.

“Normally speaking, when people create a virtual world, be it a game or a movie, or even literature and novels… the protagonist would usually be created in the image of their own species!

“In World of Warcraft, the protagonists were designed to have humanoid shape. In Lord of the Rings as well, the one who wins in the end is the humans!

“The novels written by Jinyong also feature humans as the main characters!

“In nearly every novel, the story that was written would be dominated by humans!

“Because the creator is a human!

“As for us… this world we occupy is one where the civilizations are led by humans!

“As such, the ones who created this world, this game, they must also be human. Those Players… are certainly humans!”

The chauffeur raised his eyebrows.

Chen Xiaolian rapidly continued. “They probably created us by using their own appearance as a template.”

“Hmm, and?”

“And…” Chen Xiaolian walked around in a circle and kneaded his forehead before replying. “And… I suspect that a major portion of the composition of their civilization mirrors ours.

“Truthfully, all the worlds created in the Western fantasy novels uses Western medieval civilization as a base template.

“Even the creation of the background setting in Jinyong’s martial arts novels utilizes our country’s ancient historical records as a base.

“Therefore, when creating the civilization of our world… during the process of creation, a large portion of it was created by referring to their own civilization as a model!”

“Interesting. Anything else?”

“Of course!” Chen Xiaolian replied coldly. “Here in this game, in the instance dungeons… all the abilities, be it equipment, machinery, mech, martial arts, extraordinary abilities… those strange War Pets… all of them likely do not exist in the upper plane!”

“Oh? Just now, you mentioned that they referred to themselves for base template…”

“That is a different concept in its entirety. Since they are constructing a virtual world for people to enter and experience, they must naturally satisfy some fantasy aspects in order to make it enjoyable. If they were to create a world that was completely similar to theirs, what meaning would there be in playing this game? What sort of gameplay value would it hold?

“It is based on reality, yet it has to exceed it. That is the fundamental mind-set when creating a game.

“To be able to do things that one usually could not do in the real world is what makes a game interesting.

“Thus… I am willing to make a bet! Those Players who entered out world… they could not exhibit such extraordinary powers in their own world!”

After having said those words, Chen Xiaolian looked at the chauffeur with a somewhat excited expression. “Am I right? Did I get close? Their world, their social structure, their civilization, they should be similar to ours! The only exception would be that they do not possess those extraordinary powers. Additionally… the level of their civilization should be far above ours!”

The chauffeur quietly allowed Chen Xiaolian to finish speaking.

He stared at Chen Xiaolian. However, no change in expression could be seen on his face. There was neither agreement nor objection. Rather, not even a trace of emotion could be detected.

After what seemed like an eternity, he slowly said. “Perhaps you are right, perhaps you are wrong… however, I am unable to answer your question.”

“… … …”

“I’ve mentioned this before; all information pertaining to the upper plane cannot be disclosed. That is the prime fundamental directive of the system. Any and all such information would be blocked off. Thus, no one could inform you about it. That includes me,” The chauffeur said. Then, he smiled. “Also… even if I want to tell you, I wouldn’t be able to. Because… I too, am not in the know.”

“… … …”

“Do not forget, I am just like you, a ‘virtual’ existence within this world. I am not a life form from the upper plane. I am just a… metaphorically speaking; I am just the management program for the system. Hmm, that comparison is more appropriate.”

“Just like a computer, we are part of the program inside the computer while you are the system’s management program. When it comes to the matters regarding the world outside the computer… not even you could know how it looks like?” Chen Xiaolian looked at the chauffeur.

“Correct, that is simply how it is.”

The chauffeur nodded his head. Next, his tone turned solemn.

“The reason I came looking for you today is because there are two things that I need to warn you about.”

“First, the conversation you had with Miao Yan yesterday… you had best not try to pull that stunt a second time. Any attempt to spy on the upper plane will be blocked off by the system. Additionally… it will increase your chances of being found out by the system! The only reason you are still in the safe is because you are an Irregularity.

“Remember what I told you last time?

“As an Irregularity, you are the equivalent of a virus in the system. The system will not categorize you as an NPC, nor would it categorize you as an Awakened. When separating the categories, the system’s scan for NPCs would fail to detect you. The same goes during the system’s scan for Awakened ones.

“For the time being, you have yet to be subjected to the system’s monitoring.

“However, if you try to pry into the forbidden zone, you would likely trigger the system’s alarm.

“Because any leak in information regarding the upper plane is forbidden. That is the system’s prime fundamental directive!

“Prime fundamental directive supersedes all else!

“Any existence that encroaches upon the prime fundamental directive, regardless of your identity, would result in the system’s retaliation!

“You could compare it to an artificial pond.

“Originally, the owner is only raising two things, fishes and prawns. The fishes represent the NPCs while the prawns represent Awakened ones.

“As for you, you are unexpected existence, a loach. By hiding inside the pond, you were able to escape being found by the owner.

“However, once you attempt to escape from the pond and encroach upon the forbidden zone, you will come in contact with the power grid and be found out!

“When that happens… I believe there is no need for me to tell you what the consequences would be.”

Chen Xiaolian revealed a glum look on his face and he did not say anything.

The chauffeur nodded his head. “Remember my warning. Do not encroach upon the forbidden zone.”

“And?” Chen Xiaolian asked coldly. “Earlier, you mentioned that there were two things.”

“The second thing is related to the instance dungeon that you are going to participate in,” The chauffeur’s expression loosened. “Contrary to what you might think, this instance dungeon might be more…”

“More difficult?”

“No no no, for the most part, the designated class given by the system to an instance dungeon is accurate,” The chauffeur shook his head. “I don’t mean that it will be more difficult. Rather… it will be somewhat more complicated.”

“Complicated? What is that supposed to mean?”

“How should I put it… in the instance dungeons that you participated before, there was an unusual circumstance in one of them,” The chauffeur scratched his head. “The difficulty for the Mausoleum of Qin Shihuang instance dungeon had exceeded the evaluation given by the system. The reason for that was Miao Yan’s participation. She utilized the privilege of a High-class Player to enter the Mausoleum of Qin Shihuang instance dungeon. However, the class of her abilities and strength was too high, far higher than the mean average of the other participants. Thus, the system automatically increased the difficulty of the instance dungeon. As a result…”

“As a result, the monstrously powerful Bai Qi appeared! His appearance nearly caused the utter annihilation of every single participant,” Chen Xiaolian knitted his eyebrows.

“That about sums it up,” The chauffeur nodded his head. “This time, something almost similar might happen. Only, the specifics will be different.”

1 The GM is talking about non-instance dungeon circumstance only. In instance dungeons, Players and Awakened ones will drop the spheres whenever they die, regardless of who or what killed them. The biggest difference of note between Chen Xiaolian and Soo Soo and the other Irregularities is that the two of them were meant to be dead in an instance dungeon. Instead, these two ‘dead’ NPCs activated the metal spheres within that same instance dungeon. I am not sure if that is what makes them different.

  1. Thanks

I wonder if it possible to create more prime virus then?
    1) give the orb to an NPC during dungeon, which is a characteristic of prime virus so far
    2) have GM create more situation where dead NPC live, and Chen team give orb
    3) Awakened are those originally supposed to be players, but the players can’t log in, and NPC used used the player orb to become awakened. What if instead of using their designated orb, they use something else?

GM, where the alternative to the system shop that you said you were working on….

    1. To answer your questions, I think that it is highly unlike to happen. For number 1, the NPC should supposed to be a dead but survived AND be able to get an orb. This is highly unlikely to happen because they cannot verify if an NPC is supposedly dead but survived just by suddenly meeting that kind of an NPC. For number 2, the GM cannot create more situation where dead NPC. One, that chance was highly unlikely to happen that even the GM was not able to predict it could even happen. Second, the GM cannot freely affect the game and it even already had a hard time ‘making’ Awakened ones signifying that they have small chance of occurring; what’s more for increasing the chances of making primary Irregularity? Moving to number 3, as I remembered, Awakened ones does not need to absorb their designated orb. It is already in their body only that the NPC rather than the designated Player is using the orb. Thus, they cannot use another orb while inside the game. Unless of course you could switch accounts, switching orbs, midway in the game which is not a game capability in this kind of game. Also, the orbs can only be dropped once an Awakened dies so they cannot put another orb on a dead person and expect it to resurrect then and there. I am just saying it is highly unlikely but of course it could still happen if the author deemed to do so. However, I hope the author should not because it would make the main protagonist less important than he should be. Anyway, do not forget that there is still a third primary Irregular which is the flight attendant during the first instance dungeon of Chen Xiaolian. You could also check my comment on the previous chapter on instance that a Player becomes an Irregular. 😀

    2. Wait. I reread Chapter 13 and this makes my take on number 3 wrong. However, as I can remember, the new Awakened are spawned at the same time as the Players. Meaning that the old Awakened or Irregulars like Chen Xiaolian cannot possibly meet them and let them absorb someone else’s orb before they absorb their designated orb. Therefore, number 3 still stays as being highly unlikely to happen as the rest of the scenarios you mentioned. However, other scenarios may still be possible. Note that the author has still not explained how is it they are the only primary Irregulars and, thus, not having a basis for an assumption to make a primary Irregular. Still a nice thought though. 😀

    3. As I reread the early chapters, it seems like Takashimoto Shizuka, the flight attendant, seems to not be able to get an orb and, thus, not being an Irregularity. However, she is the only one that Chen Xiaolian is sure that fits the description to become a primary Irregular. Thus, maybe she will become one if she will be able to absorb an orb. I think that to become an Irregular, an NPC should just be supposedly dead but lived in an instance dungeon. Why? Because this is the only way that an NPC to be out of the grid from the system. Remember, they send an Inspector to monitor the instance dungeon. This signifies that the instance dungeon is out of the Development Team’s direct monitoring capabilities. Thus, only there can an NPC be masked to became a full fledged primary Irregular. Giving an orb to an alive NPC in the instance dungeon or in the game/real world would not mask them. I think they would be assigned as Awakened ones. From this, I could concur that a primary Irregular just makes a person be able to die in the real/game world. Thus, they really are becoming viruses that only corrupt files and cause damages to the system. Of course, capabilities of Irregular Players are still not discussed; thus, the capabilities of a primary Irregular may still increase. For example, being able to go to the Player’s world and just that they have not yet tried doing it. They might also let Players carry over their powers when going back to their (Player’s) world. Their capability to really affect the system would be discussed once an Irregular Player shows up which would help them. Who? Do you still remember the guy who loved an Awakened but killed her eventually? Since orbs from primary Irregulars can resurrect Awakened and Players, they could reunite the two lovers for Newton to help them out on their plans.

      1. Takashimoto Shizuka can’t be a primary since she been refreshed

Regular irregularities, secondary irregularities, are still not classified as awakened since they are classified as monsters

        1. Yes, she was refreshed but still fits being a candidate on being a primary Irregular since she was supposedly dead but lived in an instnce dungeon. All it takes for her to become a primary Irregular is to absorb an orb. This is just a theory though. The author seems to not leave behind important characters who are connected to Chen Xiaolian. Remember, she was his first kiss! Haha. Anyway, on them (Irregulars) being registered as NPCs or monsters, I highly doubt it since Soo Soo was still invited to a dungeon despite being a scanned as an NPC. Thus, it is more likely that the game registers them as Awakened rather than NPCs since NPCs are not notified on instance dungeon occurences. Well, I am not sure if the author explicitly said that they are classified as NPCs. However, note that the author has loopholes too lke this chapter where the GM says that only when only an Awakened killed by Chen Xiaolian or Soo Soo drops an orb. Note that Players also drops orb when they are killed by Chen Xiaolian or Soo Soo but the GM seemed to have forgotten that. Well, I choose to believe which makes more sense to me.

        2. Remember that Da Gang also got refreshed but you saw what happened after he absorbed an orb. From this, it concurs that Takashimoto Shizuka MIGHT become a primary Irreggular. Also, you might say that Soo Soo was only invited/chosen to that instance dungeon sue to being in a guild. In their second instance dungeon, Soo Soo still did not have a guild while Chen Xiaolian needed one to be part in it. Your conjecture may be true only if Soo Soo is recognized as something else like a Player while Chen Xiaolian is recognized as an NPC explaining why he was not invited to that instance dungeon and not only due to some chance. This would mean that Soo Soo is a previous Exclusive Account of a Player which explains her split personality disorder since Exclusive Accounts are bodies which house two souls as said by Miao Yan. Also, it explains her cold and mature personality which is out of the norm and her ‘tragic story’ which was a cooked up story by the Development Team. This would imply that an Irregular Player can becomr a primary Irregular. Only that maybe Soo Soo cannot sign out or can be but did not bother explain that she (other personality) was once a Player since no once asked her anyway. This explains why she knew how to use her powers at the firt instance dungeon to kill Newton. Of course, once again this is just a theory. Believe whichever makes more sense to you.

          1. other that is indeed a possibility for Soo Soo to be another exclusive account at least her second personality , also Takashimoto is indeed a irregularity and is starting to remember Chen if you read back after they finished the Tokyo instance dungeon there was a fraze where a flight attendant talked on the phone with the saved girl Mikiko which was the one saved by the MC and his team and delivered to the safe zone , also when she saw him she thought he looks familiar , if the author did not bother showing that then yes i would have thought she would have remained a regular person , but later one she will indeed become a irregular the third one and she will be the same as the MC and soo soo a primary one . The reason the GM did not spotted her is because she did not get a sphere , also Soo Soo getting a sphere might be because Newton turned into a irregularity when possesed by the monster and that is when the metal orb dropped ending up in her hand thus making Soo Soo a irregularity .

  2. So because of Miao Yan enter the Mausoleum that result in the boss with 1 hit kill and the A level reward. Since Da Gang is about to enter this time won’t GM discover him? the whole thing gonna be a mess! Also the management program was able to locate the prime and second gen virus should it be able to locate Da Gang as well?
1 explanation to that is it found Chen Xiaolan and Soo Soo in and instance and track them. thus it’s able to find out about the second gen virus.

    1. It’s a bit confusing because Da Gang was in the previous instance dungeon (as his alter-ego), yet the reward for that was only B class. I’m unsure of any difference in level/power between Miao Yan and Da Gang, but Miao Yan seems to be quite a bit stronger.

This upcoming dungeon is an A- class, so going by the reward from the Tokyo instance it shouldn’t be increased in difficulty by Da Gang being there unless he is significantly stronger than an A- class account – which he shouldn’t be because the Tokyo reward was only B class.

I think the author has made a bit of a boo-boo in this chapter, by making Da Gang out to be as powerful as Miao Yan. Maybe Da Gang is an A class account, but Miao Yan then should be S class. So I don’t see how Da Gang can raise the difficulty of this London instance dungeon.

      1. The instance dungeon level will be increased not due to Da Gang but due to the Inspector from the Development Teamam. Da Gang is masked by the identity of the orb. He probably is detected by the game as the identity of the previous owner of the orb rather than Da Gang’s previous identity. Think of it as masking of an IP address that hackers do so that they will not be properly traced.

        1. That Inspector was from the Thorned Flower guild and looked over one of their team’s performance only 😉 And the Inspector’s real name is Da Gang.

Actually, Da Gang’s stronger than the best Angels. He’s one of the top ‘flowers’. And they survived a war with the Zero. That prime account girl had some difficalties with the game’s trap. Da Gang wouldn’t mess with it, he’ll rule over anything like it.

Why didn’t he mess up the Tokio ID? But he most probably did! Without his Hunter’s card, Meteor Rock with Angel together weren’t able to complete the quest. And where MC was forced to complete the quest with his friend, an Angel would fail too. On the level of Angel and below, one needed some very special skills to win 😉

  3. I still don’t trust this guy/thing at all. He’s just using Xiaolian as a means to his end, and he doesn’t seem to have much of the emotions of humans, making it likely that he’ll discard or betray Xiaolian when it is profitable for his goal. Plus, he’s not helping Xiaolian out very much or even telling him stuff like Xiao Gang being an irregular and stuff. Meh.
    Thanks for the chapter!

    1. We now ask ourselves, what is the goal of the GM then? Is it just to rebel against the Development Team or for a greater purpose? Say like trapping the Players and even the Development Team inside the game world. How? Making them become Irregular Players. For what is the trapping them for? Remember that it is the GM of the game world of the game world only that the Development Team limits it or have higher power over it. Thus, trapping them in the game world would make it the highest level of power in the game world which is AKA becoming a God! Thu, we expect that the final boss of this story is the GM.

  4. Chen Xiaolian’s reasoning about the Upper Plane seems off. First, he makes the assumption that they would be limited to human levels of empathetic thought without first ascertaining their humanity. An alien may be capable of understanding us without us understanding them. Also, you don’t need to understand a thing to replicate it. We can clone an animal without completely knowing the nature and results of each DNA sequence. Finally, the protagonist argument falls apart when you consider that humans could be the villain race. Like if you made a game based on Ender’s Game and let the players participate as either Buggers or Humans. A lot of people would choose Buggers if they liked playing the villain or wanted the racial benefits.

  5. so back to the matrix analogy(from my comment in previous chapter):
Morpheus reminds that Neo(Chen Xiaolian/Main Character) has the hack of creating an irregular army if he chooses to and also his partner Trinity(Soo Soo) has the ability but she doesn’t know yet.

Back to the chapter, now we know what happens to “normal” NPCs that get touched with that metal sphere, but if it touches an exclusive account, what would happen?
