☯ ISSTH Chapter 638 ☯

I saw more than one comment questioning or outright saying that I’m “censoring” ISSTH by having Patriarch Reliance say “fudge.” No, I’m not censoring it. He is not saying the Chinese equivalent of the F bomb. For further explanation see the jump.

Long story short, Patriarch Reliance is saying “your granny.” I know most other translators directly translate this epithet as “your granny,” but I chose not to. Why? Because “your granny” is not something any native English speaker will ever say, and I feel that it looses the feeling.

“Your granny” is a euphemism for “his mother, your mother, mother” etc., which is a pretty vulgar curse word in Chinese that’s usually translated as the F word. I don’t think any translator worth his salt would translate 我真他妈的不想去 as “I really his mother don’t want to go.” Any good translator would most likely go with something along the lines of “I really f**king don’t want to go!”

To say “your granny” in Chinese is not as bad as “mother,” and also sounds a bit funny. Therefore, I chose to use “fudge,” a funny euphemism for the F word that I think captures the feeling and humor pretty well.

  1. Ah well, translators retains the right to keep their works as close as possible to their original meanings, by one way or another 😀

  2. the F word seems more appropriate in the context of the chapter, but thats just my opinion. dont take the trolls too seriously, they just want your attention.

  3. Seen quite a few stories with ‘your granny’ and other versions of it. Once it was explained it makes sense.

Localisation is one thing but it can be taken to far at times, this isn’t one of them though ?

  4. I thought about it and figured there was a reason Deathblade was using “fudge”. Turns out that was the case. Anyway, I think “your granny” is quite fitting in some situations. It sounds funny and outrageous at the same time.

  5. As a British, I actually prefer “your granny”. It could be different with other people, but for me I felt immersed and indulge in the Chinese literacy. If I could also learn more culture, norm and perception from ISSTH as well, that would be amazing!

  6. The reason why translators don’t react well to complaints stem from the fact that they are complaints. If you want to make a suggestion don’t condemn, complain or criticize.

Something like, “Hey Deathblade I really respect the work you are doing and the time that you put in to put your life into translating “I Shall Seal The Heavens”. While some of the people may not understand the phrase “your granny” being a curse word in Chinese it might be okay with readers if it was still translated as such with a footnote explaining the phrase so others will find it funny in the future. The reason why stems from avoiding spending your time explaining your actions to people who might complain in the future.

Thank you kindly for your time and effort. We all look forward to this translation to follow Coiling Dragon into being a completed work!

    Cheers,

    Ravenbrand.”

  7. Thanks for the explanation. I always just thought that it was because Patriarch Reliance was a quirky, funny guy. But it’s good to have more insights into the minds of the translators.
