Important message for anyone who is just starting to learn Chinese: The Chinese word for "hello," which is 你好 nǐ hǎo, is NOT used the same way "hello" is used in English. 你好 nǐ hǎo is usually used in two ways. 1) Greet people you aren't familiar with. 2) Get someone's attention (this is why beggars and street hawkers will usually yell "hello hello" to foreigners.)
Basically, you don't use 你好 nǐ hǎo to greet people you are familiar with. The best thing to do is to simply say that person's name and/or title.
