ISSTH – Book 1 Glossary of Terms, Places, and People

This Glossary is safe for anyone reading Book 1, although, descriptions may contain some spoilers! You should be safe reading about terms you’ve already seen in the book, but if you don’t recognize something, don’t read about it. This glossary may include references to minor characters, places, or things which have no long-term impact in the story.

Appetite Control Pills – Medicinal pills which control appetite

B
Bag of the Cosmos – A type of bag of holding that Meng Hao looted from Eccentric Song’s treasure mountain. It can “contain mountains and rivers”
Bag of holding – A magical bag which can store a large amount of items inside
Black Sieve Sect – One of the five great Sects from the Southern Domain
Blood Coagulation Pills – Medicinal pills which treat external injuries and stop bleeding
Blood Crystal – See “Vorpal Jade”

C
Chang’an – Capitcal city of the Great Tang. Named after the historical ancient Chinese city of the same name.
Chen Fan – An Inner Sect disciple who is described as being very focused on the Dao
Cao Yang – A “manly” disciple of the Outer Sect who makes his debut with a Qi Condensation of the second level
Cold Wind Sect – One of the three great Sects of the State of Zhao
Copper Mirror – An item that Meng Hao was tricked into accepting as his first magical item upon entering the Reliance Outer Sect. Seemingly useless at first, he eventually learns that it can kill creatures with feathers or fur, usually by exploding parts of their bodies in a grisly fashion. It can also duplicate magical items at the cost of Spirit Stones. The more powerful a magical item, the more Spirit Stones it takes to duplicate the item
Cosmetic Cultivation Pills – Medicinal pills which maintain physical appearance
Cultivation – A type of meditation which can enable a person to achieve Immortality. Cultivation can be improved or sped up by use of different techniques, object, medicinal pills, etc.
Cultivator – A person who practices Cultivation

D
Dao Reserves – A powerful backup source of power saved by a Sect or Clan to be used in emergencies. In some cases it can be a powerful Cultivator who is kept in suspended animation after failing to break through to the next stage of Cultivation
Demonic Core (inside Meng Hao) – See “Flying Rain-Dragon”
Demon Sealing Jade – A jade slip Meng Hao looted from Patriarch Reliance
Demon Sealing Sect – The former name of the Reliance Sect
Ding Xin – A Violet Fate Inner Sect Chosen disciple who makes his debut at the ninth level of Qi Condensation. Sent to kill Meng Hao because of the incident with the iron spear
Dry Spirit Pill – Medicinal Pills useful around the fourth or fifth level of Qi Condensation

E
Earthly Spirit Pill – A medicinal pill suitable for Cultivators of the seventh level of Qi Condensation
Eastern Lands – One of the four subcontinents of the Nanshan continent
Eastern Refinement City – A city of Cultivators in the State of Zhao, controlled by an alliance of the three great Sects
Eccentric Song – A powerful Cultivator from the Southern Domain who likes to collect Demonic beasts. He also has a vast accumulation of treasures which he stores on a treasure mountain. Meng Hao ends up with some of his valuable treasures.
Elder – A position held by disciples of a Sect who can establish a Foundation within a sixty-year cycle
Elder Brother Chen – See “Chen Fan”
Elder Sister Xu – See “Xu Qing”

F
Fatty – See “Li Fugui”
Fasting Pills – Medicinal pills which allow you to not eat for periods of time
Flame Python – The powered up version of a Flame Serpent
Flame Serpent art – An Immortal skill which can be learned at the second level of Qi Condensation. It grows in power with each level, eventually becoming a Flame Python
Flying Rain-Dragon – An ancient dragon which viewed itself as the sovereign of the heavens. When it died, it hid itself in Reliance Sect territory. Meng Hao consumed its Demonic Core, whereupon the Legacy of the dragon was passed on to him. The Demonic Core continues to exist inside him
Foundation Establishment Pill – A pill most suited for breaking through to the Foundation Establishment stage. After consuming it, the body is paralyzed temporarily

Golden Frost Sect – One of the five great Sects from the Southern Domain
Grand Elder Ouyang – A Grand Elder in the Reliance Inner Sect who takes a liking to Meng Hao
Great Circle of Qi Condensation – A state achieved by someone who has reached the peak of the 13th level of Qi Condensation
Great Art of Demonic Life – A Demon Sealing Sect art which allows the user to absorb the body and life force of the target
Great Tang – A powerful government in the Eastern Lands. Name based on the historical Tang Dynasty
Guyiding Tri-Rain – The name of the young girl Meng Hao meets in the boat in the North Lake

H
Hellfighting Spike – A magical item which will cause a Frigid Qi to enter the body of anyone it wounds. A unique weapon of the Violet Fate Sect, only one hundred and eight exist
Honor Guard – A position held by a Sect disciple who cannot establish a Foundation within a sixty-year cycle
Hundred Treasures Pavilion – A shop for high-level Qi Condensation Cultivators in Eastern Refinement City.

J
Jade Slip – An item which has various magical properties including acting as a key, acting as a basic communication device, and storing information

Legacy – See “Flying Rain Dragon”
Levels – See level descriptions below
Li Dafu – Fatty’s father
Li Fugui – Meng Hao’s only close friend, more commonly known as Fatty. One of the three other boys who joined the Reliance Sect at the same time.
Lightning Flag – A magical item Meng Hao looted from Patriarch Reliance. It can defend against the power of the Foundation Establishment stage, and can absorb lightning
Little Tiger – One of the three other boys who joined the Reliance Sect at the same time as Meng Hao. Full name is Dong Hu (Hu is the character for “tiger”)
Liu Daoyun – A Cold Wind Inner Sect disciple who makes his debut at the ninth level of Qi Condensation. He was involved in pursuing Meng Hao because of the iron and silver spears
Lord Revelation – A cultivator from the State of Revelation, known for his skill in divining
Low Level Public Zone – A Public Zone for disciples of the first through third levels of Qi Condensation
Lu Song – A Violet Fate Inner Sect disciple who buys Meng Hao’s fake “treasured” iron spear for an exorbitant price

M
Magic Pavilion – A building in the Reliance Inner Sect which houses ancient records and magical texts
Marrow Growth Pills – Medicinal pills which treat broken and crushed bones
Meng Hao – Protagonist of the story. His parents went missing when he was young, whereupon he studied Confucianism and attempted to pass the imperial examinations to become a government official. He failed three years in a row, after which was taken by Elder Sister Xu to join the Reliance Sect

Milky Way City – A city of cultivators in the State of Zhao which is not aligned with any of the three great Sects. Founded by Patriarch Milky Way
Milky Way Fan – A magical item, a fan composed of sixteen feathers that can be used both in attack and defense
Milky Way Sea – See “Nanshan Continent”
Mount Daqing – A Mountain near Meng Hao’s hometown of Yunjie. It was on this mountain that he was captured by Xu Qing and taken to the Reliance Sect
Mount Tian Shan – A mountain in the Southern Domain. Name based on the actual mountain in China

N
Nanshan Continent – The setting of the story. Divided into the Eastern Lands, the Western Lands, the Southern Domain, and the Northern Desert. Two subcontinents exist, one comprised of the Eastern Lands and the Northern Desert, the other one being the Western Lands and the Southern Domain. The two subcontinents are separated by the Milky Way Sea. The geography is loosely based on descriptions of the world in Journey To The West
North Sea – A large lake in the State of Zhao which assisted Meng Hao in Cultivation progress. He suspects that it might have a Demonic consciousness
Northern Desert – one of the four subcontinents of the Nanshan continent

P
Patriarch Milky Way – Founder of Milky Way City, known to be at the Spirit Severing stage. Hasn’t been seen for hundreds of years
Patriarch Reliance – A powerful Patriarch of the Reliance Sect. In the past, he changed the name of the Sect to the Reliance Sect, naming it after himself. Was known to be at the Spirit Severing stage upon his disappearance
Pill Cultivation Workshop – Located in the Outer Sect, medicinal pills are created and sold here
Pill Distribution Day – A monthly occasion in which Medicinal pills and Spirit Stones are distributed in the Outer Sect square
Plateau Charging Pill – A medicinal pill useful at the ninth level of Qi Condensation
Public Zone – An area in the Outer Sect where fighting and killing is permitted. The Low-Level Zone is designated for levels 1-3. Higher levels must use the High-Level Public Zone

Q
Qiao Ling – A salesgirl at the Hundred Treasures Pavilion in Eastern Refinement City who takes a liking to Meng Hao
Qian Shuihen – A Violet Fate Inner Sect disciple who buys Meng Hao’s fake “treasured” iron spear for an exorbitant price

Rebirth Cave – One of the three most dangerous locations in the Southern Domain

Shangguan Mu – Daughter of Shangguan Xiu. Attendant of the second floor of the Milky Way Workshop in Milky Way City
Shangguan Song – Grandson of Shangguan Xiu, member of the Outer Sect
Shangguan Xiu – An Elder of the Reliance Sect
Skeletal Relaxation Pills – Medicinal pills which relieve fatigue
Solitary Sword Sect – One of the five great Sects from the Southern Domain
Soul Congealing Pills – Medicinal pills which restore power and spiritual energy
Southern Domain – One of the four subcontinents of the Nanshan continent.
Spirit Refreshment Pills – Medicinal pills which temporarily increase power
Spirit Stone – A magical stone which contains Spiritual Energy. It can be used in cultivation practice, and is also treated as currency within the Sect. Organized into low-grade, mid-grade and high-grade quality. There are other types of Spirit Stones above high-grade level, but exact details have not been revealed yet
State Shield Mountains – A mountain range protecting one of the borders of the State of Zhao
State of Revelation – A country located in the Southern Domain
State of Zhao – A small state located in the south of the Southern Domain. Named based on the historical State of Zhao from Chinese history
Steward Zhou – Someone Meng Hao owes money to from his scholar days
Sublime Spirit Scripture – One of the great Scriptures of the Nanshan Continent. It is made up of various manuals which describe techniques that allow Cultivators to reach the highest level of any given stage. Most of the manuals have been lost
Sun Hua – An Inner Sect disciple from the Winding Stream Sect of the State of Zhao who was present when the Violet Fate Sect disciples bought Meng Hao’s iron spear

Three Great Sects (State of Zhao) – Cold Wind Sect, Winding Stream Sect, Upright Evening Sect
Tower of Tang – A tall tower in the capital city of the State of Zhao where government officials can offer sacrifices to heaven. Decorated with depictions of the Great Tang in the Eastern Lands, it also has some connection to the Cultivation world. There are reportedly other Towers of Tang in the capital cities of other countries
Treasure Pavilion – A building in the Outer Reliance Sect which houses various magical items
Treasured fan – See “Milky Way Fan”

U
Upright Evening Sect – One of the three great Sects in the State of Zhao

V
Violet Fate Sect – One of the five great Sects of the Southern Domain.
Vorpal Jade – Also known as Blood Crystal. Formed by Patriarch Reliance using his own blood and Qi, it functions to lead disciples to a place of enlightenment where they have a chance to learn the Sublime Spirit Scripture. It also functions to return blood and Qi to Patriarch Reliance, to extend his life during his deep meditation

W
Wang Clan – One of the three great Clans of the Southern Domain
Wang Tengfei – A disciple of the Outer Sect who makes his debut with a Qi Condensation of the sixth level. Described as being perfect in every way
Wang Youcai – One of the three boys who joined the Reliance Sect at the same time as Meng Hao. Reportedly disappeared when a gust of wind blew him off of a cliff
Wang Xifan – A Dao Protector of the Wang Clan from the Southern Domain. Makes his debut at the Core Formation stage
Were-demon skill – A skill which allows the user to shapeshift into a demon with golden fur
Western Desert – A location within the Western Lands
Western Lands – One of the four subcontinents of the Nanshan continent
Wind Pennant – A magical item that grants the ability of temporary flight
Wind Walking technique – An Immortal skill which can be learned at the fifth level of Qi Condensation, which allows the user to float above the ground
Winding Stream Sect – One of the three great Sects of the State of Zhao
Wooden Sword – A weapon of immense power that Meng Hao looted from the Flying Rain-Dragon, then duplicated with his copper mirror at great price. After injuring an opponent, it will slowly drain their Spiritual Energy away
Wu Dingqiu – An Elder of the Violet Fate Sect

X
Xu Qing – An Inner Sect disciple who makes her debut at the seventh level of Qi Condensation. She is described as being beautiful but cold. She brought Meng Hao along with three others to the Reliance Sect

Y
Yin Tianlong – A disciple of the Outer Sect who makes his debut with a Qi Condensation of the fifth level
Yunjie County – Meng Hao’s hometown, located below Mount Daqing. Its neighboring counties are Yunkai and Yunhai

Z
Zhao Hai – A young man assigned to be Meng Hao’s servant when he joined the Inner Sect. Rumored to be from a rich family
Zhao Shanling – A member of the Golden Frost Sect who makes his debut at the Nascent Soul stage
Zhou Kai – A disciple of the Outer Sect who makes his debut with a Qi Condensation of the fifth level
Zhou Yanyun – A member of the Solitary Sword Sect who makes his debut at the Nascent Soul stage

Level Descriptions (as of current chapter)

Qi Condensation (ningqi) – Nine levels (in modern times); Thirteen levels (in ancient times)
Foundation Establishment (zhuji) – Perfect, Flawless, Cracked, Fractured

  1. Should the Mount Tian Shan entry be changed to Mount Heaven like in the Book 2 glossary? If so, chapters 48 and 52 also mention “Mount Tian Shan”.

    Or could they be different mountains? (It seems weird to think that Eccentric Song casually cut off the peak of Mount Heaven and transported it to use for his treasure mountain….)
