ATG – Under Heaven Clan, cast your votes!

There is a slight spoiler in this post, but it should be fine since it’s just their names. There is a reason why I chose the english form of their names when we do not normally translate names unless necessary.
1. The joke wouldn’t be understood automatically if I use footnotes, and lose most of its flavor by then.
2. I would probably have to explain and help you guys keep track of their names for those of you who aren’t good with names.
3. I felt it was fine since we did that for the black mercenary group and no one complained or got lost.

Answer to a reader asking why not just translate Yun Che/Yun Xiao if we do this: Their names weren’t made that way, they’re not obvious jokes Mars made.

There’s another option we had, so I’ll also include that as well.

Chinese
Clan Name: 天下
Kids: 天下第一,天下第二。。。 天下第七
Others: 天下雄图, 天下无敌

Pinyin:
Clan Name: Tianxia
Kids: Tianxia Diyi,Tianxia Dier… Tianxia Diqi (the part after Di will change for every kid)
Few others in the nearby future: Tianxia Xiongtu, Tianxia Wudi

English 1:
Clan Name: Under Heaven
Kids: Number One Under Heaven, Number Two Under Heaven… Number Seven Under Heaven
Few others in the nearby future: Greatest/Grand Ambition Under Heaven, Unparalleled Under Heaven

English 2:
Clan Name: Worlds
Kids: Worlds Number One, Worlds Number Two… Worlds Number Seven
Few others in the nearby future: Worlds Greatest/Grand Ambition, Worlds Unparallel (this name was the reason why we chose under heaven over worlds as a surname)

POLL HERE

I myself prefer English 1, since I don’t have to put in the explanations at the end.. xD
If you pick choice #4, I better see some suggestions under this post!

  1. I don’t know how it would look if you wrote the names as you normally would, but the whole “Under Heaven” part was quite funny the first time but will probably become tedious if they play a great role in the series. But you do as you wish, it is still great 🙂

  2. Just wondering but isn’t there a connotation for “Under Heaven” to mean Everyone/Everything
as in “Everything under the heavens?”

not too sure but that’s what I thought.

Or can we just call them the Johnsons?
    to save time and effort.
    (joking)

  3. I wish you would use Under Heaven [Pinyin]
    Unparalleled Under Heaven [Tianxia Wudi]
That way we get to enjoy both of them.
    Might annoy the Translators though…

  4. Add top note to next chapter for future refrences and unless there is a joke just call them number one, number two and afterwards third fourth and so on
But then again fifth is going to be problematic ?

  5. “Under Heaven” is better than “World’s”, as it’s more literal, although “tian xia” basically means the world (all that is under the heavens). Instead of “Number One” (etc), why not “First” (etc)? Yes, in the last chapter, the joke works better if Yun Che doesn’t understand how Number One can call himself “Number One Under Heaven” but as reading goes on, I find that “First” is smoother than “Number One”.

In any case, the names are truly crappy! I can’t blame the elf girl for not wanting to be called by her name!

  6. My suggestion:
If there is in the future, will use familiar name example: Tienxia DiYi is called Yi Er can you bold the translation as Two or le it be “Two ‘er”?
Still i am more like “First Under Heaven”, but will it be conflict with translation like “first brother” literally first male born in family? Youbare the translator that has more experience

  7. If I remember correctly, Tianxia Wudi can also be called “Unrivaled Under the Heavels” which wouldn’t be far from “Invincible Under the Heavens”

As for Tianxia Xiongtu, it’s meaning is pretty close to Grand Ambition, Grand thought, Grand Fate, Grand Destiny… It’s pretty difficult to describe since it’s basically trying describe the grand plan of everything under the heavens. I guess it can also be described as Wish, so maybe “Grand Wish Under the Heavens” could be acceptable.

    First Under the Heavens
    Second Under the Heavens
    Third Under the Heavens

Oh well, as long as it’s funny, anything works.

  8. I’m just curious… but why not use “number one under the heavens” when just introducing them (and note it in the footnote or better yet, in parenthesis), but in later chapters use their pinyin names?

Cause the joke would get old afterwards, because in Pinyin, their names ACTUALLY SOUND LIKE NAMES, even if it’s arrogant.

We didn’t care about that one bandit gang, but you gotta remember:
    1. it sounded like code names rather than their real names
    2. we didn’t care much about a bunch of n00bs that exist just to be killed in a few chapters

Here is an example (note, I bolded the thing I added):
“Hahahaha!” The muscular man laughed, cupped his fists at Yun Che and said sincerely: “Brother, please do not misunderstand. Even though I am a member of the elf clan, I love battles. When I see a strong opponent, I cannot help myself. I am Number One Under Heaven, I thank Brother Yun for saving old seven’s life. Your kindness, my clan will definitely repay you.”

“…” Yun Che opened his mouth, but did not speak. He had seen arrogant people before, but he had never seen someone so arrogant that he proclaimed himself to be the number one under heaven! Even though he was strong, he couldn’t be the number one under heaven, right? Even if you are the number one under heaven… Would you die if you were a little more humble?!

Seeing Yun Che’s expression, the muscular man knew what he was thinking and laughed bitterly: “Brother Yun, do not misunderstand, I’m not such a conceited and arrogant person but my surname is Under Heaven and my name is Number One. My father named me this way and I too am helpless.”

Surname Under Heaven (Tianxia)… Name Number One(Diyi)

How great is he at naming?!

Even though Yun Che tried his best to control himself, his brows still twitched intensely twice as he eyed the elf girl. He said with a nod: “So that’s why. Then, your sister’s name is…”

“Oh, my sister is the seventh child in the family, so she’s named Number Seven Under Heaven (Tianxia Diqi) …”

And then you can keep the pinyin names for all the other chapters and for everything else. Cause again, we don’t need the joke constantly repeated, and the pinyin does make it sound like a name.

putting the actual names in Parenthesis and then using it later allows us to keep the joke (and only put the name in AFTER he said his name was “number one under the heavens”) but it also allows us to have a more proper name.

Cause even in Chinese, at least it’d be somewhat like a name.

It is just too awkward in English.

  9. IMAO i fell it’s better if you name their name with piyin and add a little explanation after their name
ex: Tianxia Diqi(Number Seven Under Heaven)

if their name change permanently to English 1, In the future it’ll sound a little bit strange if some event appear. And I don’t think we need all of it joke every time Tianxia clan appear in this story. The joke will get old and it’ll boring. But if Tianxia clan only appear for a few arc, then why not. the joke will never get old because they only appear shortly and gone forever

    also 2nd reason
    Tianxia Diqi=Qi’er
Yun Che:”Qi’er, why elf have a long ear?”
Yun che said it when he stroke her long ear.
    Qi’er:”….(blush)”
    Jasmine:”Pervert!!!”
Hong’er:”Master. Is elf ear yummy? Can I eat it?”
    Yun Che:”….”
    Qi’er:”….”
    Jasmine:”….”
I feel it’ll sound more cute because Tianxia Diqi is a girl.

  10. y not u put their chinese names..n the eng one in bracket..
eg: “Hahahaha!” The muscular man laughed, cupped his fists at Yun Che and said sincerely: “Brother, please do not misunderstand. Even though I am a member of the elf clan, I love battles. When I see a strong opponent, I cannot help myself. I am *Number One Under Heaven*, I thank Brother Yun for saving old seven’s life.

Seeing Yun Che’s expression, the muscular man knew what he was thinking and laughed bitterly: “Brother Yun, do not misunderstand, I’m not such a conceited and arrogant person but my surname is *tianxia (Under Heaven)* and my name is *diyi (Number One)*. My father named me this way and I too am helpless.”

**please do take note that i didnt write their chinese name at first..then, when he tried to correct the mistake, then i include the chinese name..this way, the reader will have a enjoy n appreciate the joke more n also, in the future, u can always use their chinese names for the chapters to come..

PS: sorry i dont know how to bold..so i just put a *..

    1. Indeed! Putting both pinyin and english, sound better.

      I agree with you too.

Ex:Samael which means Poison of God or Samuel which means name of God

So if somebody have a name Samael/Samuel i’m pretty sure ppl also call their name directly. Not meaning behind their name.

Name is a name and meaning is meaning. Please consider it and other name too.
