☯ ISSTH Chapter 744 ☯

For those of you who don’t use /r/noveltranslations, there was recently a contest to write intro guides to novel translations and especially Chinese webnovels. Here is a pretty good one that you can share with family and friends to try to hook them. There are some things I don’t agree with in this guide, especially the assertion that “xianxia” has “evolved” to represent Chinese fantasy fiction as a whole. Considering the word has only recently been introduced, I would assert that it has “incorrectly been used” to represent Chinese fantasy fiction. Besides, there are a lot of you readers who know the difference between xianxia and some of the other generes. In any case, it still offers a pretty good introduction. Check it out!

      1. You need to finish Worm. It’s wildbow’s first, yet it’s a masterpiece. I think I might have to reread it. I myself don’t really enjoy dark settings, and Worm is pretty dark, but there’s a silver lining throughout and at the end. The story sucks you in if you read a bit more. If you want a story more like what we read here, but is written much better, check out Savage Divinity: http://www.fictiongrill.com/savage-divinity/. I’ve read many of these and honestly the only reason I read translated series here is because they update faster. In comparison the quality is super lousy compared to native english series. The Zombie Knight is also a favorite of mine, but you have to like the unique humor. I’ve got so many more. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is a fanfiction that I love better than the original series. http://hpmor.com/chapter/1

      2. It’s a great read until it gets about 2/3rds done, then it does a shitton of time skipping for no real reason, as (important) things are noted as happening during this time- it’s not just a timeskip over “generic training montage time” or whatever.

        1. I think the final few chapters of Worm get a bit insane (feel rushed or incredibly fast paced), but it’s still an excellent read if you can get through the very first arc. Really neat reveal of what’s actually going on. Oh right while I’m here, for science fiction check out Ra https://qntm.org/ra. First two chapters are meh but it gets neat after that. Fine Structure is also cool by the same author. These two are particularly fun if you have an engineering/physics/coding background.

  1. Well, to be honest, I don’t think it is actually wrong to say that.

Most fans in the west put Xianxia as the name for many stories as long as it deals with cultivation and fantasy, whether it is an actual Xianxia or not.

Language isn’t the meaning of what a word WAS but how it is used. So, if it spreds far enough, Xianxia could be used as an English word to deal with all of these magical fantasy Chinese novels. (just like how “manga” is used to define Japanese comics as an English word, or “Anime” is used for both Japanese animation and cartoon itself).

    1. Language is the meaning of a word, period. People attempting to misuse it don’t determine what language is, they determine what an improper usage is.

    2. Lulz no. Xianxia is xianxia. It’s like saying it’s all wuxia because it’s WUXIAworld. Guess it makes this site WUXIAworld with XIANXIA but not always xianxia? Xianxia will become english equivalent only if we let it spread. And we, as one of the first people in this rapidly, ever-growing community, have (or “had”, if it’s already too late) major impact on this word’s meaning in Western culture.

    1. I bet you are one of the sponsor so I thank you in advance Sir! if i am wrong, then this is a sponsored chapter 🙂 it was stated in the last paragraph in the actual chapter.

  2. I didn’t like the fact that he recomended so many novels I didn’t like, and ignored many other good novels. Then he talked bad about the mediocre ones. I feel his guide was biased after the explanation of xianxia.
